A mill is a mill, acoustically
We have produced 24 events at The Graham Mill since May 2023. It is a restored 1934 textile mill and it photographs as well as any room in the region: exposed brick, wooden beams, tall ceilings, big windows.
Every one of those features is a reflective surface. A room like this sends sound back at you late, and the usual instinct — turn it up — makes the toasts less intelligible rather than more. It is the same problem as Durham’s tobacco warehouses and it has the same answer: narrow-dispersion coverage aimed at people instead of walls, fills for seats off-axis, and an engineer riding the mix rather than a system set and abandoned.
The glass garage door is worth a specific mention. Open, the room’s acoustic changes materially — it stops containing sound and starts leaking it outside. We plan for both states, because it usually opens at some point in the evening.
The spaces
The Main Hall
Up to 200 seated. Open-plan and reconfigurable across ceremony, cocktails and reception, which is convenient and means a room change mid-event that has to be planned into the timeline.
The Greenhouse
Covered, semi-outdoor, and a completely different acoustic from the Main Hall. Usually cocktails or a ceremony, and usually its own small system.
The backyard
Fenced and private, up to 150 outdoors, with market lights already installed. Amplified music is permitted outdoors here, which is not true at every venue and is worth knowing if you want the night to spill outside.
The practical constraints
- Venue access runs 10:00am to 11:00pm. That is the load-in and load-out window and the effective outer bound on the night.
- Amplified music is permitted indoors and outdoors.
- Alcohol is in-house and catering runs from a preferred list.
- The building is a converted mill in downtown Graham, so truck access and the service panel are worth confirming rather than assuming. We have been enough times to know the answer for a standard build.
Brick and timber also take light extremely well. If you are choosing between a bigger sound system and a proper lighting design in this room, the lighting is the better spend — see design lighting.
Questions we get about The Graham Mill
Will people hear the toasts in a brick mill?
Yes, with a system designed for that room. It is a coverage problem rather than a power problem: arrays with narrow vertical dispersion, fills for off-axis seats, and someone riding the mix live. Volume alone makes it worse.
Does opening the garage door change anything?
Materially, yes. The room stops containing sound and starts losing it outdoors. We plan for both states rather than being surprised when it opens at nine o’clock.
Can we have music outside in the backyard?
Yes — the venue permits amplified music outdoors. We would still run a separate small system out there rather than pushing the main room’s sound through the door.
Do you charge travel to Graham?
No. Graham is about thirty minutes from our warehouse, inside our no-travel-fee area.
When can you get in to set up?
Venue access is 10:00am, and everything has to be out by 11:00pm. That is a comfortable build window for a full design.
Is uplighting worth it on exposed brick?
It is one of the best uses of it there is. Texture takes light, and brick under colour looks completely different from brick under house lighting. This is the room where we would push lighting over almost anything else.
