DJ, Sound and Lighting at Chickadee Hill Farms

26 events produced at Chickadee Hill Farms. Three separate zones — a climate-controlled chapel, a post-and-beam barn and an outdoor silo bar — which means three audio problems, not one.

Three zones, three setups

We have produced 26 events at Chickadee Hill Farms since October 2020. It is a 25-acre working farm in Iredell County with something most barn venues do not have: genuinely separate, purpose-built spaces rather than one room doing three jobs.

That is lovely for guests and it means more work on our side, done properly. A ceremony in the Chapel, a reception in the Barn and cocktails at the Silo Bar is three distinct acoustic environments, three sets of microphone requirements and three transitions in the timeline. Treating it as one setup moved around is how you end up with a ceremony that sounds like an afterthought.

The spaces

The Chapel

A purpose-built, climate-controlled indoor ceremony building with its own seating and good natural light. Because it was built for the job, the ceremony audio here is more straightforward than at most farm venues — a contained room rather than a field. Microphone choice for the officiant still matters more than system size.

The Reception Barn

Climate-controlled post-and-beam, around 150 seated. Timber construction absorbs better than brick or metal, so this is a comparatively forgiving room for its size, and post-and-beam takes uplighting extremely well because there is structure to light.

The Silo Bar and patio

Outdoors, with a stacked stone fireplace and a gas fire pit. This is usually cocktails and usually the spot guests drift back to through the night, which is an argument for it having its own small system rather than being an acoustic afterthought.

The wooded ceremony site

A shaded forest setting with benches, and the alternative to the Chapel. Outdoors, well away from power, so battery systems and a proper scout of where the seating actually sits.

What we bring

  • DJ and MC across the whole night rather than only the reception
  • Ceremony audio for the Chapel or the wooded site, designed for whichever you pick
  • A separate small system for the Silo Bar patio
  • Uplighting on the post-and-beam structure, which is what this room is built for
  • Dance floor lighting programmed to the set
  • Cold sparks, monograms and photobooths from the enhancements list, subject to venue approval

The standard rental here is a twelve-hour day, which is a generous window and enough to build a real design rather than a rushed one.

Questions we get about Chickadee Hill Farms

Chapel or wooded ceremony site — which is easier for audio?

The Chapel, because it is a contained, climate-controlled room built for the purpose. The wooded site is entirely doable and we run it on battery; it just needs more planning around where guests actually sit and where the officiant stands.

Do we need sound at the Silo Bar as well?

If cocktails are out there, yes, and it is a small line item. Guests drift back to the fire pit through the night and a patio with no music is a dead zone in an otherwise good party.

Is the barn a difficult room to run sound in?

Less than most. Post-and-beam timber absorbs where metal and brick reflect, so it is comparatively forgiving for its size. We still design for coverage rather than output.

Do you charge travel out to Troutman?

Usually a small travel line, quoted upfront. It is outside the Triad but a regular part of our calendar.

Can you light the post-and-beam structure?

That is the best thing you can do in that room. Structure gives light something to land on, and a barn lit on its beams looks completely different from one lit only on the walls.

Can we do cold sparks or haze?

Ask early. Effects are always subject to venue approval and a barn with climate control has its own considerations. We raise it with the venue rather than turning up with something that gets refused.
