DJ, Sound and Lighting at Castle McCulloch

42 events produced at Castle McCulloch. A glass ballroom, a stone castle and a hard 4:30pm door for evening events — which is the fact that decides everything else.

The clock is the constraint

We have produced 42 events at Castle McCulloch since December 2019. The single most useful thing we know about this venue has nothing to do with gear.

Castle McCulloch runs published event windows: daytime events from 9:00am to 3:30pm, evening events from 4:30pm to 11:00pm. For an evening wedding that means load-in starts at 4:30 and doors are not far behind. There is no comfortable afternoon build here unless you buy a time extension.

That is entirely workable and it is why crews who have done it before matter. We arrive with the plan already made, the rig pre-configured and the crew sized for a fast build rather than a leisurely one. Venues like this are where a company that owns its inventory and does not sub-rent shows the difference.

The spaces

The Crystal Garden Ballroom

A glass ballroom seating up to 300. Glass is a reflective surface and a lot of it in one room makes for a live acoustic, so the audio design is coverage-first. Glass also behaves differently for lighting: after dark the walls stop containing light and start reflecting it, which changes what uplighting does. We design for the room as it will be at 9pm, not as it looks at 5pm.

The Great Hall

The castle’s main level, around 150 for a ceremony. Stone, historic, and it takes light beautifully because there is real texture to put it on.

The Queen’s Chambers

The bottom level, small — around 32 for a ceremony or 56 seated. A compact, visually quiet setup is the right answer here rather than a scaled-down version of a big rig.

The terraces

The Great Hall Patio and the Hillside Terrace Patio, both used for ceremonies and cocktails. Outdoor, so ceremony audio and its own small system for cocktails.

What we bring

  • A crew and a rig sized for a 4:30pm load-in
  • DJ and MC with the run of show built to an 11:00pm finish
  • Ceremony audio for the Great Hall, the patios or the ballroom
  • Uplighting designed for how the glass ballroom behaves after dark
  • Dance floor lighting programmed to the set
  • Monograms, cold sparks and photobooths from the enhancements list, subject to venue approval

Questions we get about Castle McCulloch

Can you really set up a full production from 4:30pm?

Yes, and we plan for it rather than hoping. The rig is configured before it leaves the warehouse and we send enough crew to build fast. If what you want genuinely does not fit the window we will tell you that before you book it, and a time extension from the venue is usually the answer.

Does the glass ballroom cause problems with sound?

It makes the room live. That is a design question rather than a problem: coverage-first system design, speakers aimed at people rather than at glass, and an engineer who has heard this room full before.

Will uplighting look right in a glass room?

It behaves differently from a room with solid walls, which is why we plan it for after dark. Done well it is striking. Done as a copy-paste of a ballroom plan it is disappointing, and that is the difference experience makes here.

Do you charge travel to Jamestown?

No. It is about fifteen minutes from our warehouse.

What time does everything have to be out?

Evening events end at 11:00pm per the venue, and strike follows. Knowing that in advance is why we build the last hour of the night to land properly instead of being cut short.

Can we use the castle and the ballroom both?

Commonly, yes — ceremony in the Great Hall or on a patio, reception in the Crystal Garden. It means two audio positions and a transition, both of which we plan into the timeline.
