Forty minutes from the warehouse, near High Rock Lake

We have produced 19 events at Board & Batten with 4 more on the calendar. Sixty acres of rolling hills in Davidson County near High Rock Lake, about forty minutes from our Greensboro warehouse.

Board & Batten publishes more of its rules than almost any venue we work, which makes planning here unusually clean. Most of what follows comes straight from their own FAQ rather than from a directory listing.

225 guests, with the DJ already counted

The venue’s own number is up to 225 guests inside with either a DJ or a band and a dance floor. That phrasing is worth reading twice. Plenty of venues quote a capacity that assumes an empty floor and then leave you to discover that the band and the dance floor eat forty seats. Board & Batten has already done that arithmetic for you.

Third-party listings say 250. Use the venue’s 225 — it is their own figure and it is the one that includes us.

The room, and the no-nails rule

The main space has high ceilings, exposed beams, soft lighting and full-length windows, with heating and air throughout. Beams and glass and a hard floor make a bright room, and the windows mean the space changes character completely between a 4pm ceremony and a 9pm dance floor. Lighting design here should plan for both states rather than one.

Then the rule that actually changes our build: no staples, nails, screws or duct tape on surfaces. That is published and it is not negotiable. For an AV company it means every hang is clamp, truss or free-standing — drape on uprights and bases rather than fixed to a beam, cable dressed and weighted rather than taped down, and uplights positioned rather than mounted. It is entirely workable. It is also the sort of thing that ruins an afternoon if you turn up with gaffer tape and a plan to fix things to a wall.

There is a covered porch and a back patio with an indoor-outdoor fireplace, a bocce court and market lighting, plus an outdoor ceremony lawn on the hills and the option of an indoor ceremony with a conversion during cocktails.

Their published rules, and what they mean for your quote

  • Event insurance is required — the venue asks for proof 30 days out, and quotes a typical range of $125 to $450 for the couple’s policy.
  • Outside vendors are accepted with liability insurance documentation, and some vendor fees may apply. We carry our certificate and send it without being chased.
  • Catering and bar are exclusively in-house. No outside catering. That is worth knowing early because it shapes your budget more than anything we do.
  • A coordinator is not required, and referrals are offered. A staff director is on site during your rental.
  • One event per day, always.
  • Candles must be in an enclosed container on a flat raised surface. No exposed flame.
  • Sparklers must be 12 to 18 inches and lit at least 9 feet from the barn.
  • Prohibited: glitter, confetti, cornmeal, loose straw, dark petals, mylar balloons, dried flowers, non-biodegradable products.

We raise fog, haze and cold sparks with the venue directly rather than assuming, because those are not addressed in what they publish and a barn with smoke detection is its own conversation. One event per day is good news for load-in: there is no turnaround from someone else’s Friday to work around.

What we bring

  • DJ and MC running the timeline
  • Ceremony audio for the lawn, on battery where power is a distance from the site
  • Indoor-to-outdoor ceremony conversion planned with the venue’s staff director during cocktails
  • Uplighting and drape, all free-standing or clamped, never fixed to the building
  • Dance floor lighting programmed to the set, planned for a room that still has daylight in it at 6pm
  • Monograms and photobooths from our enhancements list
  • Live saxophone, violin or percussion through DJ Fusion

Questions we get about Board & Batten Events

Do you charge travel to Lexington?

No. Board & Batten is about forty minutes from our Greensboro warehouse and inside the area we cover without a travel line.

Is 225 really the limit?

It is the venue’s own number and it already assumes a DJ or band and a dance floor in the room. Some directories say 250. We would plan to the venue’s figure.

Does the no-nails rule limit what lighting we can have?

Not meaningfully. It changes how things are supported, not what is possible. Uplighting is floor-based anyway, drape goes on uprights, and anything overhead goes on truss or a clamp rather than into the building. We build this way here as a matter of course.

Can we have sparklers?

Yes, within the venue’s published rule: 12 to 18 inch sparklers, lit at least nine feet from the barn. Your photographer will want to know that distance too, because it decides where the send-off actually happens.

What about cold sparks or haze?

Not addressed in what the venue publishes, so we ask them directly rather than turning up with it. A barn with smoke detection needs a real answer, not an assumption.

Will you need to provide insurance?

We carry liability insurance and send a certificate as standard. Separately, the venue requires the couple to carry event insurance and to show proof 30 days out — that one is on you, and they quote a typical cost of $125 to $450.
