Event AV and Wedding DJ in Durham, NC

Durham’s best venues are brick, timber and glass, and they sound like it. Sound design for beautiful rooms that fight you, plus the lighting that makes them photograph the way they look.

The rooms are gorgeous and acoustically hostile

Durham’s signature venues are converted tobacco warehouses and industrial buildings: exposed brick, heavy timber, concrete floors, tall ceilings, a lot of glass. They photograph beautifully and they are among the hardest rooms in the state to make speech intelligible in.

Hard surfaces send everything back at you late. A PA aimed at the middle of a room like that gets louder without getting clearer, and by the second toast half the room has stopped following along. Turning it up makes it worse.

The fix is coverage, not volume. Column arrays that throw long and narrow rather than spraying the walls, fills for the seats off-axis, delays down a long room, and an engineer who sits at the desk for the whole event instead of setting it and leaving. That is a design decision we make before the day, from the room dimensions and a walk-through where we can get one.

Weddings in Durham

Beyond the sound problem, the other thing a brick-and-timber room needs is light. Those spaces go flat and brown under their own house lighting, and every photo from the night shows it. Uplighting on the brick, a proper dance floor rig and spotlighting on the cake and florals is usually the difference between a nice room and a room people remember.

DJ and MC, ceremony audio, uplighting, drape, monogram, photobooth and cold sparks, plus live saxophone, violin or percussion through DJ Fusion. Packages start at $1,800 and most couples land between $2,500 and $3,500. More on the weddings page and the enhancements page.

Corporate, university and medical events

Durham’s corporate work skews toward universities, medical and research organisations, and the startup and life sciences community around them. In practice that means symposia, annual meetings, donor events and awards nights.

Those events live or die on whether the general session runs cleanly: presenters miked correctly, a screen or LED wall the back row can actually read, slides run by a technician rather than whoever is nearest the laptop, and a running order somebody is calling. That is covered in detail on the conference production page.

The rooms here, and what each one needs

Converted tobacco warehouses

The venue type Durham is known for, and the reason this page leads with acoustics. Brick, heavy timber, concrete and glass, with ceilings high enough that the reflections arrive late. Coverage-first design, fills and delays, and an engineer at the desk all night. Lighting on the brick does the rest.

Industrial and mill spaces

Similar acoustic problem, bigger volume, and usually a real question about where usable power actually is. These rooms take light beautifully because there is so much texture to put it on.

Hotel and conference space

Predictable, rigging-friendly, and where most of the multi-day conference work happens. The main variable is whether the venue requires house labour for anything overhead.

University, medical and research venues

Auditoriums, atria and conference centres on campus and in hospital buildings. Their rules on rigging, power, access and amplified sound are set by the building, not by us, and they are worth confirming before anything is designed.

Getting there and getting in

Durham is under an hour from our Greensboro warehouse, so a day-before load-in is realistic when the venue allows one. Downtown venues usually mean street load-in and a shared freight elevator, both of which we plan around in advance rather than discovering at 7am. Where a travel line applies it is on the quote upfront.

Questions we get about events in Durham

Our venue is a converted warehouse. Will people be able to hear the toasts?

Yes, if the system is designed for that room. It comes down to coverage rather than power: column arrays with narrow vertical dispersion, fills for off-axis seats, delays if the room is long, and an engineer riding the mix live. Send us the dimensions and we will tell you what it needs.

Do you charge travel to Durham?

Sometimes. Durham is under an hour from our warehouse, close to where a travel line starts to apply. If one applies to your event it is on the quote upfront, never a surprise on the invoice.

Can you light exposed brick without it looking cheesy?

Yes, and it is one of the best uses of uplighting there is. Texture takes light well. We set the color to your palette and can change it through the night so dinner and the dance floor feel different.

Can you handle an outdoor ceremony and an indoor reception in different parts of the building?

Routinely. It usually means a second small system and a second set of microphones for the ceremony, plus a strike and reset between the two. We plan the timing for it rather than rushing it.

Do you do university and medical conferences?

Yes. Those are a large part of our corporate work. Campus and hospital venues often come with their own rules about rigging, power and access, so tell us the building early and we will find out what the actual constraints are.

What does a Durham corporate event cost?

Entry-level single-day corporate production starts around $4,000. A typical 100 to 500 person single-day event runs up to around $50,000 depending on rooms, screens, lighting and video. We quote in simple line items.

Will you come and look at the room first?

For a venue we have not worked before, and for any of the hard rooms, yes. Durham is close enough that a walk-through costs us an afternoon, which is cheap next to discovering a problem on load-in day.

Do you handle both the general session and the breakouts for a conference?

Yes, and one company across the whole schedule is materially better. One crew chief who knows the running order, one invoice, and rooms that are set and tested before the first session rather than during it.

Tell us about the room

Venue, date and headcount. If it is one of the hard rooms, tell us that too and we will design around it.
